syslogd got you down? Try this fix

So, I was having a serious issue this morning with my CPU on my MacBook running at around 120% for the first hour of work (actually this was happening last night while I was away from my computer too) and I was getting tired of my computer running slow as hell, and therefore I investigated.

Now, the reason why my processor was running so hot was because of a system process called syslogd. This process basically logs all sorts of cool stuff for our computer in the background, and shouldn’t take up much processor usage, but here was where my problem began.

I did some searching around and found this thread in the Apple Support forums. It turns out I’m not the only one this is happening to. What appears to be happening is simply a pre-backup preparation for Time Machine that ends up erroring during logging and causes your CPU to go haywire. The problem here is that even after force quitting syslogd, the daemon opens up again and picks up where it left off, even after a restart of the machine.

Luckily enough, there is a fix for this. In the thread from the Apple Support forums, user ‘fredrikhw’ managed to find a somewhat simple way to fix this along with some help from this MacOSXHints.com post (yes, this did work for me).

How to fix a maniac syslogd:
(You will need admin access to perform this)

  1. Open System Preferences
  2. Click on Time Machine
  3. Turn Backups OFF
  4. Open Activity Monitor (Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor)
    • If you don’t have it set already in Activity Monitor, above where it says ‘Show’, above, make sure All Processes is selected.
  5. Find syslogd and then click Quit Process (upper left corner of Activity Monitor)
    • You’ll be prompted for an admin password, and after you type one in and press OK, syslogd will be ‘dead’
  6. Finally, open Terminal (Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal)
  7. When Terminal opens, type this (you can copy & paste this):
    sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.syslogd.plist

    • This command turns system logging OFF
  8. Press enter, and you will, again, be prompted for an admin password. Type the password in and press enter and voila! all fixed!
  9. Edit (10:45AM): After searching a bit more online I came across this post in the MacRumors.com forums and in case you want to turn logging back ON (which you may want to do to in case you have any other system-based problems) by typing this command:
    sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.syslogd.plis

    • Also, as mentioned in that forum post, you may want to check your system.log file located in /var/log/ as it may be taking up some extraneous space (mine is 31.5MB, but in the forum post the poster’s system.log was 500MB)
      • To navigate to this file, open a new Finder window and press Command (the Apple button) + G and type
        /var/log/
and press Enter. Scroll down to the system.log file and press Command + I to get the info on the file and check it’s size. Now I’m no expert, but if it’s over 500MB, I would trash it IF you need the space. I can’t guarantee this won’t cause any problems if you delete this file, so proceed with caution.

Now, I have only just done this today and I’m not 100% sure on if this is a permanent fix and I don’t know if this means I need to have Time Machine OFF from now on or not, or if it simply needs to be off for when syslogd is getting killed or whatever, but for now, I know that syslogd is no longer effing up my computer and I can be happy about that.

My feelings/rant on karma

Being the awesome college student I am, I was purchasing a BLT from an on campus eatery when I started to ponder on things. Warning: semi-philosophical rant coming up from a not-so-philosophical guy.

Sitting down to eat my  BLT I began to wonder why I do the things I do. Not to sound high and mighty, but I do tend to do the ‘nicer’ thing when it comes to strangers and definitely to my friends and family. I hold the door open for the person behind me when entering or leaving a building or I smile at a stranger I pass in the hall or outside on the way to class, and when I think about it, it all is because of my personal believe in karma, but let me say, for the record, I do not do these things solely because of karma, I just prefer to do them because it makes me feel good to do things for others and if I do anything in life it is to be as good of a person as possible.

Karma, to me, can be summed up in the phrase “what goes around comes around.” Sure the idea has it’s origins within Buddhism and Hinduism amongst other eastern religions, but for me it’s as simple as good implies good and bad implies bad.

But the explanation of karma was not what it means to me, but as to why I believe in this idea as a whole. Many would say, “Mike, you selfish ass hole, you only do good things so good things come to you,” and at first I would think that this is true and that I am a selfish ass hole, which I know I am, but after pondering today I have come to realize, really, why I believe in my own personal version of karma: fear.

MC Chris owns

… I wanna go to an MC Chris show!

Anyone get that?

Well, given that my last post was all hippie-liberal and such, I’ll move onto some random and fun stuff:

I love my hacked iPod. Seriously. It. Is. Awesome. If you have an iPod touch or an iPhone and you haven’t hacked it, you really do need to to get the most out of your gadget or whatever you want to call it. And yea.

Cool stuff with Leopard. If you’re into customizing your OS in a somewhat-easy-but-really-cool-looking-after-you-do-it way, follow this link. It makes Stacks prettier.

What else… hm…  I saw this before it was on Digg–Super Mario Galaxy: 11 out of 10. Hells yes.

More to come soon I’m sure.

Writers guild rant, take 2

HollywoodIf you had any questions as to what the Writers Guild of America strike is about, this video explains it all. Sure, it could be biased (more like ‘probably is biased’), but nevertheless, I’m a liberal and I’ll be supporting those who are in the minority (a great portion of the time) and politics aside, I feel that those damn corporations are being money-grubbing-whores.

In all honesty though, what makes a TV show? Is it the cameras? The actors? The set? No. It’s the writers. Without them, you have no story. Sure, you could say that reality TV has no script and it’s still watchable, but would you prefer The Hills over, say, The Office? Fuck no. Hell no. Damn no. Really, I’d rather not watch TV period than watch The Hills, but my point is that scripted and well thought out TV vastly surpasses mediocre/barely watchable TV. And what about talk shows? (I mean good talk shows like The Daily Show or Late Night with David Letterman, not shows like The View) Where will you get your comedic news from? Read the rest of this entry »

What to do about the writers strike

AP coverage of the WGA strike

So, after reading that article, I can justify pirating movies/tv shows. Seriously. If it weren’t for all of us–all of the consumers–there would be no DVD revenue to argue about. 1 DVD can be distributed to thousands and thousands, obviously.

And this is what the ‘industry’ is worried about. What if the pirates come and decide to end this. End it by not buying any more DVDs or TV shows online. What would happen then? Sites like the Pirate Bay and Demonoid don’t seem to be slowing down any time soon and are constantly growing. Isn’t the power in our hands?

And yes, the writers do deserve the cash for working on those o-so-clever and mind blowing scripts, but for movies like Shrek The Third and Big Mama’s House. No. No, fucking no. For every shitty movie that comes out, 5 good ones should be pirated. And TV shows like CSI and Grey’s Anatomy… no. I’d pirate 1 for 1 but even still… they are terrible.

Again, the power lies with us.

A bit on my experience with a hacked iPod touch

So, let’s see here… I got my iPod the day before it was officially released (9/27/07) and I hacked my iPod… I don’t recall. Somewhere around early to mid-October, a few days before iJailbreak was released. But since then here’s what I know has worked for me and what I currently use:

Working:
Installer (duh)
All of the iPhone apps (Mail, Google Maps, Weather, etc.)
Summerboard (plus all of the themes even if they are missing icons for some apps)
iToDoList
All of Erica Sadun’s apps except Widgets which was very buggy for all widgets I tried (simple and complicated)
NES minus the sluggishness when multiple sprites on screen or multiple movements are occurring, but having NES games still rocks
All of the Mobile- apps
Light
Sketches
Ants
Apollo
FireflyMediaServer
Mines
Tapp
iCountDown
iSplit
Vista
SendSong
iBlackJack
Tiff Exploit Fix
Taskbar Notifier
Kind of working:
Customize (I could launch the app, but couldn’t change anything…)
Stack (It works, but I wasn’t able to customize the stack(s) and also my ‘dock’ was missing an icon as the stack took up to spots)
Services (Bluetooth?)
VNSea (everything connects, but I get a jarbled screen on my MacBook and Windows XP desktop)

Not working:
weDict (I tried multiple dictionaries with no success)
Colloquy (No idea why this won’t work, even after multiple installs)

What I’m currently using: (Straight from Installer.app)
Installer (duh)
iBlackjack
NES
VNSea
MobileFinder
MobileToDoList
Sketches
CommunitySources
iApp-a-Day
BSD Subsystem
MobilTerminal
Summerboard
Tiff Exploit Fix
Erica’s Ported Utils
Erica’s Utilities
Taskbar Notifier

And yea. If you’re looking to jailbreak your iPod Touch, look no further than http://jailbreakme.com/ which, if you navigate there with your iPod Touch, will jailbreak your iPod Touch with one click on and on top of that, install Installer.app and fix the TIFF exploit in Safari which allows for this whole install to occur. Awesome right?

Anyways, if you have any questions I am more than willing to answer them.

Leopard; likes and dislikes

So, as I go along this week I’m going to update this post with my likes and dislikes of Leopard. Here’s my initial list:

Likes:
1. The look of the default Mac Installer program
2. Stacks
3. The amazingly smartness of Spaces
4. Being able to see/modify Expose.app, Front Row.app, and a bunch of those previously hidden applications from my Applications folder.
5. Stacks
6. The fact that all of my applications (so far) work flawlessly
7. The new icons for my network drives and for my Time Machine drive
8. Tons of minor, yet noticable changes in the OS throughout the Finder
9. Menubar transparency.
10. How easy it is to run Time Machine… seriously, it’s so easy.
11. Stacks
12. My MacBook runs SUPER cool.

Dislikes:
1. After installing the Adobe CS3 suite that my .torrent files didn’t initially open in Transmission, but intstead in Opera which was hidden inside of Adobe bridge (not necessarily Leopard, but I thought I would let you in on that weird deal)
2. Not being able to unmount my external drives because they are in use (I did turn off Time Machine, don’t worry. It has to be something other than that.
3. First app not to work for me: MagiCal. Kind of pissed…

As I said, I’ll add more as more comes (and as I have more free time and less homework.)

-Mike
